With the entry of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the country, visiting social places such as bars, clubs and restaurants is likely to spur the spread of the virus.
A visit to most clubs, bars and restaurants in different cities and towns would expose the human behaviour in these places that is likely to cause a rapid spread of the deadly coronavirus.
In one of the clubs within the central business district of Kisumu City, people can be seen making merry while speaking to one another into the ear with no one wearing face masks, probably for the obvious reasons of either chewing, eating or drinking.
The behaviour is obviously due to the deafening loud music being played.
Another observation I made is that most of the revellers are not only sweaty, but also noisy in the sense that one has to shout at the other in order to communicate.
One may wonder whether or not an intoxicated person, particularly in such a congested environment, is likely to make the right decisions. But from what I observed, the merrymakers seem to be oblivious of the existence of the coronavirus, touching and holding each other while dancing or shouting.
Fast-spreading virus
The question one needs to ask is, what next? The answer is obvious: Every person will walk, ride or drive home. And—come to think of it—during their interactions with fellow commuters on their way home or with their families on arrival at their residences, how many people will they have put at risk of contracting the fast-spreading virus?
The Ministry of Health ought to move with speed and introduce mitigation measures that will ensure controlled merrymaking at social places during this festive season so that the deadly Covid-19 variant does not find a fertile breeding ground. BY DAILY NATION
