A man who was arrested in Juja over the brutal murder of his father in Mombasa has been detained for 12 days as police conclude investigations.

A Mombasa court on Wednesday granted the police a request to have Mr Abdul Majid Nagil detained at Central Police Station as investigations into the gruesome murder of 69-year-old Nagis Abdallah Fateh continue.

The detention order was issued by Senior Resident Magistrate Rita Amwayi, who directed that the suspect be returned to the court after the expiry of the 12 days.

A detective from Directorate of Criminal Investigations Urban police station Stephen Sachita moved the court under the certificate of agency, saying he needed the detention order to enable him to record statements from key witnesses.

Mr Sachita also informed the court that he needed more time to take the 28-year-old for mental examination at the Coast General Teaching and Referral hospital.

“I have forwarded Mr Nagib’s clothes for analysis at the Government Chemist. I am yet to obtain a report on the same,” he said.

Mr Sachita also told the court that he has forwarded the suspect’s mobile phones to the DCI headquarters in Nairobi for forensic analysis and is yet to receive the report in the same.

Arrested in Kiambu County

The report, the officer said, will assist him to establish whether the suspect was involved in the murder of his father at their Bondeni residence.

The court was told that preliminary investigations have established that Mr Nagib had in his possession a mobile phone belonging to his deceased father and that they lived in their house just the two of them.

“The dentation is, therefore, necessary to enable the investigating officer to conclude his probe into the incident,” state counsel Annette Wanjohi told the court.

However, the suspect, through his lawyer Lawrence Obonyo opposed the police request noting that the detective has had enough time to conduct their investigations.

“Two weeks is a lot of time, the court should not allow the police to detain the respondent for more than 10 days ,” said Mr Obonyo.

The police had asked to be allowed to hold the suspect for 14 days pending further investigations.

The report on the murder of Mr Fateh was reported at the Central police station under OB number 15/18/12/2021.

Mr Nagib was arrested on December 21, 2021 in Juja, Kiambu county and ferried to Mombasa, where he was booked at the police station on the same date under OB 2/21/12/2021.

Suspected murderer

According to the detectives, the suspect fled to Nairobi after killing his father over unknown reasons.

Mr Fateh’s body parts were found stuffed in a sack days after his macabre murder. Unconfirmed reports indicate that Fateh served in the United Arabs Emirates military before he retired and came back to Kenya to enjoy his retirement peacefully.

At the time of his death, the police said the elderly man was living with the suspect and no reports of any disagreement had been reported prior to the killing.

The suspect is said to have lied to the family members about the whereabouts of his father after he was discovered missing.

At one point, he was reported as saying that his father had gone to visit their farm in Kwale County.

But when the family insisted on knowing the truth, the suspect disappeared only to be arrested in Juja days later after the lifeless body of his father was discovered in their residence.

The suspect will be presented to court on January 4.   BY  DAILY NATION
