Police in Nairobi comb crime hotspots, arrest nine suspects

Police in Nairobi’s Starehe Sub-County have arrested nine suspects during a raid on three areas known to be crime hotspots. The nine are suspected to be involved in a series of crimes.

Makadara OCPDTimon Odingo said all the suspects were male, who were allegedly robbing the public.

“I confirm that three suspects allegedly robbed people waiting for public transport at a stage while six others robbed pedestrians after ambushing them along the road at night,” Mr Odingo said.

The police boss told journalists that three suspects were arrested at a matatu stage near Bunyala Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area.

Three other suspects were arrested near Capital Centre as they were walking along Mombasa Road at night.

“Three suspects were mugging people at Likoni bridge situated along Likoni Road in Nairobi’s Industrial Area. Usually, they would hide under the bridge and then suddenly attack a pedestrian so long as he or she is walking on the road alone,” Mr Odingo remarked.

Notorious crime hotspots

He further confirmed that the areas had been reported to be notorious crime hotspots after several incidents were reported.

“We were alert to confront the suspects after being informed of the three locations without the suspects knowing we had set a trap for them,” said Mr Odingo.

The government, through the Interior CS Fredrick Matiang’I, said security had been heightened before, during and after the Christmas festive season.

“Members of the public are assured of adequate security as we head to the Christmas and New Year celebrations. We have intensified our day and night patrols throughout the country,” Dr Matiang’i said.   BY DAILY NATION
