Media Council of Kenya board extends David Omwoyo’s contract

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) board has extended chief executive officer (CEO) David Omwoyo’s contract by five years.

This means Mr Omwoyo will now serve MCK until July, 2027 when the second and final term will end.

MCK Chairman Maina Muiruri said the renewal of the CEO’s term, which was to end in July 2022, comes after a performance evaluation by the MCK Board supervised by the State Corporations Advisory Committee (SCAC).

Further, the contract extension has been made in accordance with SCAC guidelines which require that a decision on the CEO’s contract should be made at least six months to the expiry of the current term to allow for smooth transition.

“The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) board has renewed the term of the CEO Mr David Omwoyo as the Chief Executive Officer for a second and final term, until July 2027,” said Mr Muiruri in a statement to newsrooms on Sunday.

Mr Muiruri added that the decision to hand Mr Omwoyo a fresh five-year term stems from his stellar leadership of the organisation.

He pointed out that even though the evaluation pass mark for CEOs serving in State Corporations is 70 percent, Mr Omwoyo scored an impressive 96 per cent.

“The board is exceptionally impressed by the performance of the CEO in the last four years and his thinking around strategic interventions in media regulation in a changing environment,” he said.

“The board noted the turnaround at the council, including opening of four regional offices and improving the financial position of the Council is excellent,” added the chairman.

Some of the turnaround at the Council attributed to the leadership of Mr Omwoyo include enhancing collaborative participation of sector players in media development matters.

Further, the Council is currently finalising processes guided by the Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs on development of a media policy, media diversity fund, advertising code of practice and a review of the Media Council Act, 2013.

According to his profile on MCK website, Mr Omwoyo boasts more than 15 years’ experience in journalism, media training and management, spanning the public, private, religious and non-governmental sectors.

Before joining the MCK, he was the Managing Director of Waumini Communications and Communications Director for the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops for six years.

The 39-year-old is also credited with growing an enviable countrywide media network including overseeing and coordinating the establishment of more than 18 community radios in different parts of the country to promote community dialogue for sustainable peace and rural development.    BY DAILY NATION
