Milk firm gifts needy mother of triplets in Kirinyaga Central
Grace Wambui from Kirinyaga Central experienced a difficult motherhood journey while attempting to have her second-born.
Wambui says she lost three children through miscarriage in 2018. In April this year, however, she gave birth to three bouncing baby girls!
The triplets, she narrates, brought joy to her family but there was a problem: As casual laborers, Wambui and her husband were financially constrained to provide for the now family of four children.
Worse, she was unable to breastfeed the triplets as her breast milk was insufficient. She had to rely on infant milk formula, which is expensive and was depleting fast due to the demand by the triplets. This resulted in the family seeking help through the media, neighbours and relatives
“I underwent a safe delivery but I have had an extremely difficult motherhood experience while feeding the triplets."
"I’m running out of supply of the formula very fast, which at times we are not able to meet the high demand due to the high cost. A litre of the formula costs over Sh1,200. That’s too expensive for us,”Wambui said.
A Nyeri-based milk processing firm has responded to her cry for help.
Mukurweini Wakulima Dairy Ltd staff members on Friday trooped to their home in Kirimunge village, Kirinyaga Central, where they donated an assortment of food and other baby use products to the family.
Led by the firm’s chairman Muhika Mutahi, the members said they were touched by the plight of the family and had to act fast and come to their rescue.
“We have not stopped at this. We will continue supplying the family with milk for the next one year. In the next three months, we will provide the milk formula to needy kids and for the next six months, we will supply dairy milk because the girls will have started weaning,”Mutahi said .
The firm will also consider sponsoring the three girls' education to ease the financial burden on their parents.
Wambui, who was overwhelmed with emotion , thanked the firm for extending kindness to his family and for timely responding to their cry.
“My husband and I had hit rock bottom and we were wondering how we would continue providing for the triplets. Whatever small we had saved ran out and we had to rely on friends and family.”
“The goodies will go a long way in meeting the needs of the babies as well as our own. We are grateful to Wakulima for positively responding to our plea,” she said.
Being a breastfeeding week, Wambui also appealed to the government to support lactating mothers through provision of free breast pumps and milk infant formula to mothers who are unable to breast feed due to various reasons.
Wambui’s mother, Mercy Wambare, also thanked Wakulima for their generosity. Wambare said she was helping the daughter raise the three children but just like Wambui, she too had insufficient resources.
“I was elated when Wambui got triplets but we have had a rough time bringing them up. In the last three months, she has been staying under my care and though we have managed to continue caring for them, it has been a very overwhelming experience," she said. BY THE STAR
