2,947 birth certificates lie uncollected in Narok

Nearly 3,000 birth certificates lie uncollected at the Huduma Centre in Narok.

Centre manager Evelyn Katamboi said there are 2,947 birth certificates that are yet to be picked by members of the public.

Katamboi said the birth certificates have been lying at the centre since last year and efforts to reach the owners through the mobile numbers they provided were futile.

“We are working closely with the chiefs to help in distributing the documents to residents within their areas of jurisdiction but some of the applicants could not be traced,” she said.

She spoke to the press in her office.

The centre manager added that most of the uncollected birth certificates are for children who were born in the hospital hence it is difficult tracing their background.

“We request the parents to pick the important document or else we will destroy them,” Katamboi said.

She also said that 7,614 birth certificates have been processed at the centre since last year out of which 4,667 have been collected.

“The reduction of the waiting period has reduced the number of documents being left uncollected at the Huduma Centre since some applicants used to wait for the documents for a long time and ended up relocating from this area without picking them,” she said.

Katamboi said they have been receiving a steady supply of materials to process birth certificates from the headquarters and this has led to shortening the time to process them.

“There is an ongoing automation process at the Narok Huduma Centre where such applications would now be done online through the e-Citizen website. This will make the issuance of the birth certificates instant after application,” Katamboi said.

In 2017, the government launched the National Education Management Integrated System. This means every child joining school should be entered into the system and a birth certificate is one of the requirements.

Students require birth certificates for registration under Nemis, which is the digital registration of all students who are given a unique identification code used to track their progress at all levels of education.    BY THE STAR
