The Catholic Diocese of Nakuru will build a Sh714 million hospital to boost the provision of health services in the county. Our Lady of Mercy Mission Hospital will be constructed at St Marys Pastoral Centre in Nakuru Town next year.

“In our strategic plan for 2020-2024, we want to move Mercy Mission Hospital Annex from Assumption Centre and rename it Our Lady of Mercy Mission Hospital. We will fine-tune the architectural work before the end of this year,” said the hospital’s Board of Management Chairperson Joseph Senteu.

He added: “I hope the hospital will contribute to the diocesan mission of evangelisation.”

The hospital will recruit about 91 medics including 50 nurses, two counsellors, 10 clinical officers, two morticians, five medical officers, two radiographers, six laboratory technicians, six pharmacists, two physiotherapists, two dentists, two medical records officers and a nutritionist.

The hospital will also hire 36 non-medical staff including a chief executive officer and 10 cooks among other staff.

Bishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba said the diocese will continue to play its critical role in the county’s health sector.

“We have Mercy Mission Hospital in Eldama Ravine in Baringo County which is part of Nakuru Diocese and it has been our desire to bring such services to Nakuru. The birth of Our Lady of Mercy Mission Hospital in Nakuru is part of this commitment of the church in fulfilling an important aspect of its healing ministry,” said Bishop Muhatia on Friday.

He lauded the hospital’s board of management for ensuring the dream, which he conceived five years ago, is now becoming a reality.

“Our Lady of Mercy Mission Hospital will offer quality medical services to the people of Nakuru and beyond at affordable rates,” said Bishop Muhatia.

Bishop Muhati praised the Governor Lee Kinyanjui administration for streamlining the Nakuru County’s health sector.

“The upgrading of Nakuru Level Five Hospital has been impressive and I commend the county government for revamping the health sector,” said Bishop Muhatia.

“Nakuru has some of the best public health facilities in Kenya; Margaret Kenyatta Mother-Baby Wing stands out as an impressive health facility within the Nakuru Level-5 Hospital,” added Bishop Muhatia.
