Former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa.

Tanzania’s former President Benjamin William Mkapa, 81, is dead, President John Magufuli has announced.

Mkapa died on Friday at a Tanzanian hospital.

In a statement, Magufuli urged Tanzanians to remain calm.

“It is with a heavy heart that we have received the news of Mkapa’s passing,” he said.

Mkapa led Tanzania from 1995 to 2005 before handing over to Jakaya Kikwete.

He was born on November 12, 1938.

Magufuli declared a seven day mourning period, during which all flags will be flown at half-mast.

Mkapa, also served as an ambassador, minister and key official of the ruling CCM party, Magufuli said.
