City OCS admits cop may have helped suspect escape custody

A Nairobi OCS has told the court that one of his officers might have led to the disappearance of a suspect in their cells.

Kamukunji OCS Shamir Yunis had been summoned to explain how Martin Wasike, a Ugandan national, who was charged with kidnapping a police officer escaped from lawful custody.

The OCS on Tuesday told the court that 'man is to error' and one of them might have mistakenly or deliberately led to the escape of Wasike.

"Man is to error that's a fact of life, one of us must have erred and if it's deliberate then there is an institution of dealing with the issue," he said

He asked the court for more time to be able to apprehend the fugitive.

The court heard that as an OCS, Yunis had opened an inquiry into the circumstances under which the suspect disappeared.

He has also sent a notice to other police stations to assist him in re-arresting Wasike.

Wasike was charged last week alongside two others with kidnapping police Constable Abel Misati in January this year with the intention of killing him.

Wasike is alleged to have disappeared from the cells a day after he was charged.

The OCS asked the court for three months to be able to track and locate the fugitive.

However, Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot said three months was a long time.

He gave the OCS two weeks to move with speed and apprehend the suspect.

The matter will be mentioned on June 2 when the OCS is expected in court to update the court if the accused will have been arrested.
