Over seven million Kenyans are homeowners – Census

Kakamega County leads with the highest number of homeowners in the country.
In Volume IV of the 2019 population and Census results released on Friday, out of 47.6 million Kenyans, 7,379,485 Kenyans own their homes.
This is 61.3 per cent of the total population.
Of this, Kakamega is leading with Some 369,381 residents owning homes while 62,765 pay rent.
A total of 6,387,020 Kenyans own homes in rural areas while some 992,465 own homes in urban areas. 
From the statistics, the total of 4,660,027 Kenyans live in rental homes.
Of this, 3,669,425 rent houses in urban areas while 990,602 rent houses in rural.
Here is a list of counties leading in the number of homeowners;

  2. Meru           313,867
  3. Kiambu         294,040
  4. Bungoma     293,353
  5. Machakos    275,882
  6. Nakuru        275,360
  7. Kisii           255,080
  8. Murang’a     242,262
  9. Kitui       224,626
  10. Kilifi   199,451
Here is a list of Kenyans with the highest number of Kenyans paying rent;
  1. Nairobi    1,354,882
  2. Kiambu   498,012
  3. Nakuru   322,763
  4. Mombasa  297,830
  5. Kajiado  185,863
  6. Uasin Gishu  147,951
  7. Machakos  141,539
  8. Kisumu  120,033
  9. Meru  109,916
  10. Kilifi 98,466
Out of these, Nairobi has a total of 12,121 households. Only 138,976 own their own homes
The average household size declined to 3.9 per cent in 2019 compared to 4.2 per cent as per the 2009 population results.
The general population has grown to 47.6 million in 2019 from 37.7 million in 2009.
The outcome will be used by the government in distributing its resources countrywide.
President Uhuru Kenyatta received the data results last year, lauding the team for ending the exercise within three months since it was concluded.
