The rescue efforts are set to continue into the night after a Ugandan boat capsized ...
The death toll from an accident where a boat capsized in Lake Victoria on Saturday afternoon has risen to at least 23.
Initial reports by Ugandan police indicated that 10 people died, 40 others were injured and many others were still trapped under the water in the submerged boat.
According to Ugandan media outlets, at least 100 people were on the boat drinking and merry-making.
Among them was Prince David Wasajja who is a brother of Buganda King Ronald Mutebi, singer Iryn Namubiru and businessman John Fredrick Kiyimba who were all rescued.
The cause of the accident is yet to be established but speaking to Ugandan media outlet Daily Monitor, Asuman Mugenyi, director of operations for the Uganda police, attributed it to overloading and bad weather.
“We expect (the number of passengers) is beyond the capacity of the boat. It was overloaded and unfortunately people were drunk. We suspect the mechanical condition of the boat and the weather contributed to the sinking,” Mr. Mugenyi was quoted by Daily Monitor.
