Gov't directs Kenya Railways to increase number of commuter trains, reduce fares

The government has directed the Kenya Railways Corporation to increase the number of commuter trains on all routes following the paralysis of public transportation countrywide.
The directive comes after matatu operators on Monday morning stayed off roads following the re-introduction of the stringent ‘Michuki rules.’
In a statement to newsrooms, Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macaharia also directed the corporation to reduce the fares by 10% until public transport services resume.
“As the Government continues to enforce the Traffic Law to improve road safety and management of the sector, the public is requested to support the Government efforts in order to realize the long-term benefits for all Kenyans,” reads the statement.
“Therefore to ensure the public will be able to continue with their day to day activities in nation building, Kenya Railways Corporation is hereby directed to increase the number and frequency of commuter trains on all routes and also reduce the fare by 10% until the normal public transport services resume.”
