Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Secretary-General Seth Panyako was charged on Monday with causing disturbance, following his arrest over a strike at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
Mr Panyako was arrested on Monday for allegedly inciting nurses at KNH to strike. He was apprehended as the caregivers agitated for better treatment by their employer and for security cases to be handled properly.
“SMALL MATTER”
The Secretary-General and two others were charged with causing disturbance in a manner likely to breach peace and taking part in an unlawful assembly.
Mr Panyako and his co-accused, Joseph Wanyoike Wanyambura and Evans Mwendwa Mwaluko, denied the charges.
Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi released them on a personal bond of Sh50,000 and termed the case a “small matter”.
Nurses gathered outside Milimani Law Courts in a show of solidarity with the three.
The nurses protested, accusing KNH management of apathy.
Citing the case of nurse Mildred Akinyi, who was assaulted by the relatives of a patient who died, they accused the hospital of taking matters of insecurity casually.
Clinical Officers have vowed to support their colleagues in the bid for better treatment.
