Elders ‘ban’ political rallies in Fafi after chaos at school event

News

Fafi eldersElders from Fafi in Garissa County have said no political rallies should be held in the constituency following fracas that occurred at a prize giving day in a secondary school two weeks ago.

Elders drawn from all sub-clans in the constituency Wednesday warned of chaos if the upcoming August 4 education forum that National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale is expected to attend is allowed to go on.
There was chaos and pandemonium two weeks ago at Fafi Girls Secondary School when Fafi MP Abdikarim Osman blocked the Director of Basic Education Habat Sheikh Abdi, who was the guest of honour, from addressing the gathering.
Police were forced to shoot in the air to calm down angry youths who started throwing stones.
They are yet to issue any statement regarding the incident.
RESOLVE ISSUES
The elders, led by Mzee Bare Aden Ali, said they anticipate another fracas in the upcoming function since the previous one has not been resolved and efforts to bring stakeholders together have hit a dead end.
“We are peace-loving residents and we don’t want any chaos brought about by politicians. That is why we are banning any political rallies in the constituency until differences are resolved,” Mzee Ali told Daily Nation.
“We respect the Majority Leader in the National Assembly (Duale) but we are telling him that he should not be part of people who are bringing disunity and chaos in our constituency. He should keep off until elders resolve all underlining issues,” he added.
ARREST CULPRITS
The elders have at the same time appealed to the relevant government authorities to act decisively and bring to book those who planned, disrupted and caused chaos at Fafi Secondary School.
Another elder, Mr Moge Abdi Noor, said they are not opposing development brought by local politicians but they are against those he claimed are out to bring disharmony among communities living in Fafi.
Mr Noor said the constituency has never known chaos since independence and they will now work towards bringing unity and finding solutions to all underlying issues.
