JSC elects lawyer Mercy Deche as vice chairperson

Mercy DecheLawyer Mercy Deche has been elected the vice chairperson of the Judicial Service Commission.

Ms Deche, the LSK representative in the Commission, was proposed by Prof Tom Ojienda and seconded by Justice Aggrey Muchelule.

She takes over from Prof Margaret Kobia, who has been appointed to the position of a Cabinet Secretary.
Chief Justice David Maraga is the chair of JSC. All the members of JSC were present during the election.
Justice Mohammed Warsame of the Court of Appeal was recently re-elected by judges to represent them in the commission.
His name was later forwarded to Parliament for approval, a move that irked JSC.
The Commission has since said Justice Warsame will not appear for vetting as directed.
The Law Society of Kenya supports the JSC’s position and has since filed a case blocking the intended vetting.
Other members of the Commission include Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu, Mr Warsame (Court of Appeal), Prof Ojienda (LSK), Ms Emily Ominde (magistrate), Justice Muchelule (High Court).
