The Nation Media Group has signed an agreement with the UN Women to join its Global Media Compact programme, committing itself to uphold the tenets of gender equality in the way it conducts its business.
NMG becomes the first media organisation in East and Southern Africa to join the programme.
The signing was done on the side-lines of the Nation Leadership Forum Thursday evening at the University of Nairobi that discussed “Kenya’s Gender Dilemma”, one of a series of such forums meant to create awareness and spotlight gender issues as part of a mission to positively influence society.
Launched in 2016, the UN initiative—‘Step it Up for Gender Equality Media Compact’—partners with media outlets around the world to implement the equality and empowerment of women within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Country director UN Women, Zebib Kavuma, said UN Women will work with NMG to mainstream gender equality and women’s empowerment in the media house by providing technical support to ensure generation of gender sensitive content.
“This is a commitment by NMG that it will push the gender agenda forward. We’re hoping that other media organisations around the continent will join in,” she said.
“I think we don’t give this issue the attention it deserves. But with this initiative we want to do just that,” said Joe Muganda, NMG CEO.
