Police hunt suspects behind hate leaflets in Lugari

News
Police are hunting for people who circulated leaflets in Lugari, demanding that a community leave for voting on October 26.
The leaflets found in parts including Mwamba, Mautuma, Lumakanda, Lugari and Kipkaren market centers have sparked tension in the Kakamega constituency.
Members of several communities live in these parts.
Area MP Ayub Savula condemned the circulation and asked members of the Kikuyu community to stay put as they will be protected.
NASA candidate Raila Odinga withdrew from the election saying it would not be free and fair.
He was to face Jubilee Party President Uhuru Kenyatta a second time following his successful petition against the August 8 result.
Savula said residents who participated in the repeat should not panic because it was their democratic right.
“It appears the leaflets were printed by people with money, with the intention of causing ethnic chaos but I, as MP, will not accept that,” he told The Star by phone on Sunday.
“I went to school with members of the Kikuyu community, many of whom were born and brought up in Lugari. I will not allow anyone to take advantage of politics to cause political animosity among our people.”
The MP said he asked IG Joseph Boinnet to ensure the culprits are arrested and charged.
Senior police officers in the area said they were following crucial leads.
The area is a NASA stronghold where many boycotted the vote – less than 3,000 went to polling stations.
Savula said he would visit the constituency to calm communities and urge them to continue living in peace and harmony.
“I have received calls from so many people who are worried but we will deal with the situation and ensure no one is harmed or forced to leave Lugari because of politics.”
